Throughout my life, I've always been an indecisive person. When ordering food at restaurants, I often overthink and prolong even the most minute of decisions. So when it came to picking a concept for my game, I was at a loss. I n order to find inspiration, I turned to my trusty old pal, the random word generator. Each word that I generated could feasibly be a game title, and I got the wheels of my brain turning thinking up the different genres for each option. Eventually, I settled on the word "Underline" as my game title. I envisioned the game as exploring a defunct underground subway line and scavenging for supplies as you fight mutated subway workers and sentient turnstile machines. And the train schedule would serve as a time constraint for traversing the map. This functioned as what I would consider a natural evolution of the maze game we worked on in class, while also being set in a more detailed and interesting setting. After coming up with the general outline for the concept, making the concept art was a breeze. I drew inspiration from post-apocalyptic settings like the walking dead, while also borrowing monster designs concepts like "Berserk" and even "Wall-E" for the turnstiles in particular. The overall plot and setting of the game was partially inspired by the book "Yokohama Station" which is set in a sentient labyrinth that evolved from a former subway station. In conclusion, when it comes to making concept art or even concepts in general, it is important to remember that no concepts are 100% original. What is really essential is taking the great foundations laid by creative people before you and to try to put your own personal spin on it.

Over the summer my big sister, who recently finished a coding class in college, taught me how to code. Over the course of the past six weeks, I have learned from her how to code basic arguments and loops in Python. This has culminated in my newest project, which consists of characters from Avatar The Last Airbender that I coded the ratios for inhabiting a completely procedurally-generated landscape.
I faced many problems while making this project, such as committing coding errors. For example, one such error forced me to start over completely and rework all the formulas. I hope to implement animations into my coding project later on. In my experience, learning code has been humbling. Because you are working with a machine that cannot understand you unless you properly indent your lines of code, and even a single comma can throw off the whole shebang. All of this however becomes worth it when you are able to see your own finished project that you alone know the amount of time and commitment that was poured into it. In conclusion, learning code has been a wonderful experience and I hope to continue into this school year on my own time. Summary . I learned code over the summer . Code is hard Illustrator was one of the first Adobe applications that we learned how to use in class. So it seems only fitting that I revisit it for the first assignment of the new year. In the making of my "coronavirus rose" picture, I revisited using shape builder, which was one of the first assignments we did in illustrator. The picture itself uses these shapes I built to form interlocking patterns representing a rose. The reason I made this was because patterns have always been very interesting to me and I thought a good challenge for myself would be to make an interlocking pattern out of seemingly random shapes, and I think I succeeded. After I finished, my mom asked me if I was trying to draw the coronavirus. I hadn't thought so, but I'll go with it.
In conclusion this experience with Illustrator has been a good one. Summary . I revisited Illustrator . I used it to make an art piece Up until just last week in class I had never used Photoshop, or any actual photo manipulation programs, and because of this the experience has been kind of rough. In class, I often find myself behind the more experienced photoshop users. Which is the main reason I come into tutoring In the mornings some days. Besides that I have found using Photoshop to be a very enjoyable experience. I have enjoyed using the effects and photo manipulation so much that in my free time I will use free versions of photoshop such as Gimp or Pixlr to edit pictures. One bad experience I had with photoshop was right after I thought I had finished my sandwich for my project, only to be told by Mr. Bourgeois that I had skipped the part of the masking process and that I would have to spend a really long time going into each individual layer and erase the lines. That moment was very semi-traumatic, because I went from felling finished with my work to realizing that there was still a lot of work ahead of me. one good experience that I had during the sandwich project was when we got to pick our own images of chips and soda from the internet. I enjoyed this part because it gave us the freedom to make the sandwich more like our own. For this part of the project I decided to find the zaniest flavors of soda and chips, and after some digging I was able to find some bacon flavored soda in a picture consisting of a row of strange carbonated drinks I quickly cropped it out of the picture individually, and just the felling of adding extra work for myself just for the sake of personalizing my project is really refreshing, because often in tutorial projects alike this there is not a lot of room for messing around. All these good experiences on photoshop inspired me to participate in an online Photoshop battle.Where using pixlr I proceeded badly change a cat with a skull on its chest into the Punisher from marvel. The main moral of the story is that as a person who loves making art but sucks at drawing photoshop is basically the perfect application and experiencing it for the first time in class has opened up a world of possibilities for me.
Summary Teo talks about the highs and lows of his experience during the sandwich project. Teo talks about photoshop experiences outside class. |
